TIPENE

A LEGACY REBORN

Tīpene – A Legacy Reborn traces the reopening of one of Aotearoa’s oldest and most influential Māori institutions: St Stephen’s School, known to generations as Tīpene. Closed for 25 years, the school reopens its doors in 2025, marking both a homecoming and a turning point.

Established in 1844, Tīpene has shaped generations of Māori men who have gone on to lead across politics, academia, business and iwi. Its legacy is undeniable, yet its closure at the turn of the millennium - following serious concerns around governance, safety and wellbeing - left an unfinished chapter in the school’s story.

As new leadership steps in to guide Tīpene into its next era, the documentary sits at the intersection of past and future, examining what it means to revive an institution so deeply embedded in Māori memory. Through voices of old boys, whānau and those tasked with rebuilding the school, Tīpene - A Legacy Reborn reflects on continuity, challenge and renewal.

Beneath the surface, the film turns to a deeper conversation. Tīpene becomes a vehicle to explore the intergenerational relationship between Christian faith and traditional Māori belief systems - how these worlds have met, merged and, at times, sat in tension within Māori education. As the school reopens, the question is not simply how to honour tradition, but how to move forward with clarity: deciding what is carried, what is reinterpreted, and what is left behind. The film reflects on where this relationship sits today, and how Māori might acknowledge the full complexity of this inherited history while shaping a future that is both honest and self-determined.
